No, it's leather and fabric. Nowhere really to engrave it. My cat engraved the leather on the front when he slept on it and stretched his claws, however. I think of him every time I use it now.

shure you can turn the notepad around so when you open it with the notepad on your left hand side and the pocket area on your right hand side... no problem at all

When you say fold, what exactly do you mean? I was able to write on the pad fine. You can even take the pad out if you'd like.

Short answer: Yes, it will fit in the longer document pocket. However, that pocket is very loose and if you do not zip the entire portfolio closed, your tablet could easily fall out. The is a small, padded pocket inside the document pocket that has a velcro fastener. This looks more ideal for a tablet, but is too small for Surface. Looks like it would hold smaller (~7") tablet.
