The rubber clips are not magnetic.

Q: Is the magnet in the base or the clip?

The magnet is in the base, the clips just provide something for it to snap onto and keep into the little grooves. This means if you have a metal desk, you can not just rely on the re-stickable base, but the magnet inside to snap against the edge/back if you want it more discreet.
