Q: If I have an 18" woofer, would I need a shaker?

If you have enough power (1,000 watts for example) that 18" sub will probably shake your chair anyway. The size of the room and type of flooring also effect how vibrations are transferred from the sub to your listening space. I would try it without a shaker first, and see how it feels. I added one to my recliner because I had to turn up my audio louder than I want to make my chair vibrate. Shakers are a fun effect, but make sure you run 50-100 watts to it,and if you mount it on a couch, you may need more than one.

Q: would a single one of these be better than two of the Dayton Audio pucks?

I haven't done a direct comparison between the 2, but also depends on the application. The audio puck is small, less powerful, available in either 8 or 16 ohms. I bought 2 of the bst-1's 4 ohm for my couch on each end, opposing each other, wired in series to get 8 ohms. I also wired one of them in reverse polarity so that they would be in phase with each other. It really feels like you're there, in the movie or video game. Most household amplifiers are stable at 8 ohms, and most car amps are stable around 4 ohms or less.

Q: What screw size if used for these?

It would depend on what you are attaching it to. I would use whatever the largest size that fits through the mounting hole and as long as what you are attaching to will support. Ie if you can go with a 1" screw and still be in the material, go for it. Keep in mind these produce alot of force so having them very securely mounted is critical. I hope that helps
