Well built

Actually used this to convert a 5K speaker output from a National receiver to 8 ohms. Works fine.

functional but poorly packaged

arrives with mounting feed all bent up and case was dented a bit. still functional just ugly

It works as claimed!

I bought two of these to replace output transformers on an old stereo tube amplifier. Although both arrived a little banged-up in shipping, they mounted properly after straightening the bent tabs, and worked well. I measured the DC resistance of the primary of each, and both were about 375 Ohms. The turns ratio, primary-to-secondary, at 1 KHz was about 24 for the 8 Ohm output winding and 35.5 for the 4 Ohm tap. The phasing was: black lead of the primary with either of the outputs, Yellow (8 Ohm) or Green (4 Ohm). This is in agreement with markings on the sticker on the bottom of the transformer that indicated the red wire to be connected to the supply voltage and the black wire to go to tube anode (plate). In my application, the EL84 anode DC current was about 30 mA, with a supply of 350 Volts. I used the 4 Ohm tab for output with an 8 Ohm load (to present a 10K Ohm load to the tube) and pulled out 4 watts before noticeable waveform distortion due to clipping!

Good 4400:8 impedance ratio

I bought one of these and tested the 8Ω secondary with 10 Vrms at the primary and an 8Ω resistor load. From 20 Hz to 10 kHz, very stable impedance ratio of about 4400:8.Above that, increases gradually to about 5000:8 at 20 kHz.That was the extent of what I looked at, since I'll be using it for transformer coupling in low power class A audio amps. It should work perfectly for what I need. YMMV if you use it in a 1000 W guitar amp. 😀

substandard packing but seems ok

packing poor! Some Dented case we'll see soon if working

Used for 5000 Ohm speaker need

I put one in a case with a 50W 4 ohm for a test bench speaker. Restoring old Hallicrafters S/SX series and these mount inside the chassis for allowing 4 ohm speaker hook up.

Antique Radio Repairs

Worked well to restore the 4.5 watt single ended audio output section of a 1938 Zenith floor model radio. It drives the 12" electromagnetic speaker perfectly! Also used one to make a test speaker setup for the same Zenith radio chassis models.

Good for guitar, not for hifi

Bought a couple of these to experiment with a somewhat unusual output tube that happened to need a 5K load. The good: the inductance ratio is pretty much spot-on; based on my calculations, with a 1kHz signal, the impedance ratio at the 8R tap is 5000:8.77 - plenty close for tube amp work. The bad: my tube needs to flow 60mA DC bias current, and I'm pretty sure that's saturating it. Distortion starts coming in at around 1W output, and is objectionable by 2W. It would be nice if there were a published spec for this, but I get it that for $17 apiece, you just have to take your chances. The other issue is that the primary DCR is a whopping 485R - it drops over 35V from my 300V B+ at 60mA.Bottom line - this might work fine for an EL84 or 6V6, which need less than 50mA at idle (maybe much less, depending on B+). But it doesn't work for my application, and given its shortcomings, I'd be hesitant to use it for hifi purposes over a couple watts. But I'm sure it makes for a great single-ended guitar amp!
